When the process is followed perfectly — and still wrong

“The process is being followed - to the T.”

Step by step. Exactly as they were trained.

The question becomes: Is the process right?

One of the risks I see more frequently in payroll today is transactional processing without the fundamental payroll knowledge to recognize when something is creating risk. A practitioner can follow every documented step, hit every deadline, be great at following instructions and produce a payroll that looks completely successful…while something underneath it could be quietly breaking. Perhaps something in the system configured incorrectly, or maybe a calculation that doesn’t comply with the law. An inherited workaround that was never meant to become permanent, or the person who built the process that left years ago and left no trail or documentation of why things are done that way. The process gets repeated because that’s how the new owner learned to do it, and that’s where payroll knowledge really matters.

Knowing how to process payroll and recognizing where to push back and why are two very different things.
